Brand History

Brand History

The Bad Ass Coffee Company of Hawaii got it’s start on the Big Island of Hawaii in July 1989 as a popular spot where the locals enjoyed freshly roasted and brewed Kona coffee that was grown and harvested nearby.

Like all great secrets, it didn’t take long before the legend of Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii spread outside to adventurous tourists who sought out the first Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii location for the taste of pure Hawaiian culture.

As the word of this amazing “local” coffee spread, those that enjoyed it, wanted something to remember it by and the early versions of the brand we know today found their way onto coffee bags, mugs, hats an t-shirts.  A legend was born!

One such tourist was Michael Bilanzich of Salt Lake City, who’s wife B.J., purchased a purple Bad Ass Coffee Company of Hawaii hat.  Michael was so taken by the playfulness of the brand, that upon arrival to Salt Lake City, he began to explore the brand, the products and eventually purchased Bad Ass Coffee Company of Hawaii along with Royal Aloha Coffee and the Tea and Spice Company with a vision of bringing a little bit of the Aloha Spirit to the mainland.

We opened our first Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii store in Salt Lake City in May 1995 and followed by opening two more stores in the area by the end of that year. Since then, the brand has continued to grow attracting discerning coffee lovers who take their coffee seriously, but want to enjoy their coffee as they would if they were in Hawaii – in a memorable, playful and relaxing atmosphere.

In 2008, we trademarked Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii” leveraging the unique brand promise to deliver authentic Hawaiian grown coffees filled and a rich sense of the Aloha spirit, and began to franchise our stores - expanding across the US and Internationally with stores in Japan, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Favorite Bad Ass Coffee Roast: Volcanic.

“I’m a dark roast coffee lover and Volcanic is our deepest, darkest, smokiest roast without being bitter. My favorite Blend though is Pele’s Blend. Pele’s blend is dark (Volcanic roast) plus 13% Kona (Full City Roast) and a splash of Kenyan coffee (Full City Roast). Rich, lightly acidic and a touch of Kona nuttiness.”

Vice President of Operations

Favorite Bad Ass Coffee Roast: Medium Roast.

“I prefer to order my coffee like the way I order my steak. If you like dark roast, it’s like ordering your steak well done! I prefer full flavor and a medium roast when I order my coffee, like ordering a steak medium, so that I get full flavor and more caffeine in my coffee than a dark roast. My favorite Bad Ass Medium Roast coffee is Hawaiian Signature Blend, Full City Roast.

“Our Signature Blend American Roast is my favorite roast. It offers a light, satisfying coffee flavor with the most caffeine.”

Robert Moxley

Robert Moxley

Franchise Owner, Santa Rosa, CA

"The coffee franchise market is full of "me too" sleek urban brands that are copy cats of the big chains.  Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii stands out from the crowd.  It’s a fun brand full of palm trees, donkeys, corrugated tin and stunningly great quality coffee that appeals to a much bigger audience than the “me too” brands.  The "Bad Ass" style attracts new customers into my store, but it’s the quality of the American coffee that turns those new customers into loyal customers. Add a responsive and "family-style" franchise owner experience and you have a formula for success that is just so much better than the competition."
